capsule endoscopy - Non invasive Bowel evaluation

Capsule Endoscopy (CE) is an advanced wireless endoscopic technique which allows the doctor to examine the inner lining of your gastrointestinal tract. The other alternatives like CT scan are unable to give the mucosal details that are visible on Capsule endoscopy.
The most common indications for CE is 1) to search for a cause of bleeding from the small intestine (occult gastrointestinal bleeding). 2) chronic mid abdominal pain .3) malnutrition of undefined cause. It may also detect polyps, inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease), ulcers, and tumors.
The capsule is the size of a large pill ~ 1-inch long and < ½-inch wide. You will be asked to swallow the capsule. This capsule has its own camera & light source and takes pictures of the gastrointestinal tract as it passes through. The capsule battery usually lasts for 8-10 hours during which it continuously acquires images. These pictures are sent via radiofrequency signals to a small receiver device worn on your body. The doctor will be able to view these pictures after completion of the study and generate a report.
Anesthesia isn't required for this procedure and it is a day care procedure. The capsule usually passes out in stools in 2-7days and can be safely done in all without obstruction.
Prior to a CE, patients have to undergo preparation similar to colonoscopy and then be fasting for atleast 4-5 hrs to get the best out of a CE study. A CT or MRI abdomen may be needed prior to CE in people with obstructive symptoms.
